BE OUR EYES AND EARS

Standard Surveys
We need people to carry out surveys for us. We have a number of different types of survey to choose from, and you can take on as much or as little as your circumstances allow. However, whichever type of survey you are doing, it is very important to stick to the methodology and to remain consistent if results are to be comparable from year to year. When data from a number of surveys in an area are combined this can provide information on changes in squirrel numbers over that area. The data also enables the evaluation of changes in squirrel populations on a single site, for example, after management changes, by comparison with trends from many sites.

For more information about what is involved, see our Survey page.

Sightings
Send us records of when and where you see squirrels. Don’t assume we already know – most of the time we don’t! You can either report a sighting online, or you can download a recording form (pdf form) to record several sightings which you can send in by post or by email.

Other Tasks
Local squirrel groups need people to help run groups, enter records onto the computer, collate survey results, develop educational material, organise events, design and maintain websites or take photographs. Some groups may need volunteers who are willing to undertake grey squirrel control. To find out how you can contribute, contact your local squirrel group (details on our Local Groups page) or complete our online volunteer form.
